Smart Hotel Wi-Fi Security: Secure Networks

Offering Wi-Fi is one of the best things you can do to increase guest satisfaction. Guests want it and it’s common for them to actually check to make sure it’s provided before they book rooms.

One thing that’s essential to providing guests safe Wi-Fi is to establish a secure network, as opposed to an open network. This means establishing a Wi-Fi system that requires a password for guests to connect to the network.

Make sure your guests are aware that your Wi-Fi network requires a password, so they don’t mistakenly connect to an Evil Twin network, one designed to look like your hotel’s network and offering an attractively high connection speed to trick users into logging on so hackers can steal information or monitor their activity.

This requires you set up a secure network. Again, password-only access is key. If your system simply requires users to enter a room number you have an ‘open’, not a ‘secure’ network, and others can snoop on your guests’ internet activity.

“If you have to enter a password in your operating system, you’re fine,” HowToGeek explains. “For example, if you log into the Wi-Fi network by clicking it in Windows and you then have to enter a password before connecting, it’s encrypted.”

Test it yourself to determine if your current system is secure or open: “Look at the security information when connecting. If it’s a secure network, you’re good,” HowToGeek says.

If you offer only an open system be sure your guests know that and be sure they know that information is not encrypted and is liable to theft. Being able to tell your guests “Yes, our Wi-Fi is on a secure, password-protected network, and we change the password frequently,” preferably daily, goes a long way to giving your guests the best possible experience.
