How’s Your Pillow Menu?

Walk into some of the higher-end hotels in New York, London or Paris and you will have the opportunity to select from a pillow menu, created by professional sleep consultants retained by the hotel to advise you on the perfect pillow.

You may not be in a position to offer your guests the services of a private sleep consultant but you can offer your guests a choice of pillows for their stay.

No, it doesn’t have to be quite as “frou-frou” as an actual pillow menu, but at the front desk or in the room you can let guests know that you have a few different pillows they can select from.

One pillow you’ll want to have on hand is called a tri pillow. It’s a V-shaped pillow much favored by nursing mothers and others with back and neck issues. There doesn’t have to be one in every room, many guests will have no need of one, but when you need one you’re sure grateful to your hotel if they can give you one.

And whether you use microfibre pillows or feather & down pillows as your regular bedding offering, let guests know they can request the other if need be. Beyond allergies, there are simply some people who find it much easier to get to sleep with a firm microfibre pillow.

And conversely, there are people for whom a down pillow means a good night’s rest. Some guests will even prefer polyester fill pillows, so have some of them on hand too.

Do you have quilted latex pillows? Some guests will really appreciate being able to request one, as many people find they give better head and neck support.

No matter what kind of fill is in the pillow, the guest will almost invariably prefer a cotton pillow slip. Though many 50/50 polyester-cotton blend pillows are just as comfortable as 100% cotton pillow slips and tend to last much longer.

So no, you don’t have to have a personal on-site sleep consultant, often simply handing over the right pillow is just as good.
