Preventing Theft from Hotel Rooms

It’s one of the most delicate aspects of running a hotel property - how do you diplomatically keep light-fingered guests from stealing room items, in a way that doesn’t make them feel like they’re in prison?

You don’t want to chain the flat screen TV to the wall, but you don’t want to have to replace it either. You don’t want to give your guests the impression that you don’t trust them, but let’s face it - there are thieves out there.

What to do?

Hotelogix recommends installing anti-theft alarms on such items “susceptible to theft,” such as TVs, any other electronics, artwork or computers.

They don’t have to be obvious, in-your-face devices. “Small features like anti-theft hangers will help prevent thefts and keep costs down,” Hotelogix says.

And by the way, “embossing or imprinting your hotel’s name on the frontal panel of electronics like televisions… may not dissuade very-determined thrifty guests,” either: “Ensure the electronic devices in the hotel room are firmly fixed on the supporting surface with alarms that are set off” when anyone tries to remove the item.

You can give guests the opportunity to purchase hotel-personalised items such as bathrobes, towels, cutlery or other items. Many guests simply, honestly want souvenirs of their travels and some genuinely think bathrobes are complimentary items.

Putting a card in the rooms with prices for the items that are not complimentary accomplishes two purposes - it gives guests the opportunity to purchase the items and it subtly tells guests no, they’re not free to take home. An economical deterrent to theft.
