Should You Put A Hair Dryer In Your Guests’ Rooms?

One thing many travellers would dearly love not to have to pack is a hair dryer. They’re big, they take up space that could be used for something else. If such guests know that your hotel can be relied upon to provide adequate hair dryers, that’s a big point in the hotel’s favor.

Of course it depends on where you’re located. If you’re in a very dry or hot climate, guests might not be so concerned. If you’re in a humid or damp area, or a colder climate, then be sure you provide a hair dryer capable of doing battle with the elements.

Rule of Thumb

The general rule of thumb is that if you’re a three-star or higher property, guests will expect to find a hair dryer in their rooms. If you’re a one or two-star hotel, guests will be pleasantly surprised to find one, and it will leave a positive impression.

Hair dryers are a surprisingly common point of evaluation for online traveller chat boards. “Does this hotel provide hair dryers?” is a common question asked about specific properties. When people are travelling light, it becomes an important consideration.

Guests also talk about what kind of hair dryers they found in the rooms. “Lots of places we have stayed in have hair dryers. But they have usually been those wall dryers. Sometimes the wall dryer would be positioned so that you could not use it and look in the mirror at the same time” is entirely typical of hundreds of comments. These do not come from impressed guests.

If you’re providing your guests with hair dryers, congratulations, well done. Even if you have them at the front desk, not in the rooms, but available to all who ask, give them one that won’t leave them wishing they’d packed their own.

A sturdy hair dryer of over 2000 watts is a good way to show your guests you really want to provide a useful service.
